Australians are wondering how the nation's energy needs should be managed during and after the transition period required to address the threats of global warming and climate change. In this community forum, Dr Mark Diesendorf and Senator David Shoebridge will provide their perspectives on what are the most, and the least, promising options for solving the problems and achieving the best outcomes. Attendees will have an opportunity to quiz both speakers, and to present their own perspectives.
The transition from fossil fuels to an ecologically sustainable system based on renewable energy is underway. However, it is being resisted by the political power of the fossil fuel and nuclear industries, and by continuing growth in energy consumption.
Speakers: (1) Dr Mark Diesendorf (Hon A/Prof of Environment & Society, UNSW Sydney), (2) Senator David Shoebridge (Greens, NSW)
Dr Diesendorf's talk will bust some of the myths about electricity generation from renewables, nuclear and gas being disseminated by opponents of the transition.
Senator Shoebridge will highlight the dangers of climate change and articulate the ingredients required for an effective national response through government policy, legislation and investment.
