Join Dr Amanda Cohn MLC as she discusses abortion is healthcare
The 5th anniversary of the decriminalisation of abortion in NSW is approaching. But abortion is still hard to access in NSW because of cost or location.
As we are seeing in the US, abortion access can be eroded. We need to remain on the front foot in NSW. Decriminalisation isn’t enough. Abortion needs to be embedded in mainstream public health services, and safe and accessible for all those who need it.
The NSW government must:
- Provide first-trimester surgical abortion at every hospital in NSW that provides reproductive health services, by tying service provision to funding, like in Victoria
- Support and facilitate GPs to become prescribers of medical abortions
- Update legislation in keeping with TGA changes so that appropriately trained nurses and midwives can prescribed medical abortion as well as doctors
- Stop the weaponisation of the conscientious objection clause being used by organisations rather than by individuals
- Remove onerous and bureaucratic mandatory reporting requirements for abortion providers
Hear from Dr Amanda Cohn Greens MLC and former abortion provider, change activist Jess Hayes and researcher Dr Anna Noonan. They’ll delve into the current landscape of abortion access in NSW and discuss how we can improve it.
