Join Brisbane Councillor Jonathan Sri & City of Sydney Councillor Sylvie Ellsmore in a discussion about how Councils can support and strengthen community voices - and democracy
Local Councils represent a huge diversity of residents, visitors, students and workers. Inner city Councils like Sydney and Brisbane are responsible for hundreds of millions in funding for services, housing and more. It's the level of government closest to the community, but too often Councils focus on ‘consultation’ or ‘engagement’, rather than shared decision making with communities they represent.
Joins us in a community roundtable to discuss what works, and what Councils can do better, to ensure community voices are genuinely reflected in the decisions that Councils make.
Discussion will consider models such as the ‘participatory budgeting’ implemented at Brisbane Council, which directly involves residents in deciding how Council should spend its funds, Citizens Juries, and other examples of models designed to ensure community empowerment through Council.
If you are under 18, your parent or guardian will need to contact the event organiser directly to let them know there will be someone under 18 attending.
